ELIDA, Ohio (WLIO) — A district championship was on the line Saturday in Division VII as Delphos St. John's Blue Jays squared off against Mohawk Warriors at Ed Sandy Field.
The Blue Jays entered the game having won six of their previous eight contests and wasted little time taking control.
In the bottom of the first inning, Andrew Elwer ripped a hard ground ball to shortstop that found its way into the outfield, allowing Tyce McClain and Cameron Elwer to score for an early 2-0 lead.
Elwer also dominated on the mound. The junior right-hander recorded a pair of strikeouts in the second inning and tossed four innings of no-hit baseball.
St. John’s added to its lead in the third when Jackson Wiechart hit a ground ball to short that brought home Drake Fittro. Fittro slid safely across the plate to make it 4-0.
The Blue Jays continued to pull away in the fourth inning. With the lead already at six runs, Logan Duncan delivered an RBI single that scored Fittro and extended the advantage to 7-0.
Later in the inning, Maddox Kroeger lined an RBI hit to right field, bringing home Cameron Elwer and capping off the scoring.
Delphos St. John's Blue Jays defeated Mohawk Warriors 9-0 to claim the Division VII district championship.
The Blue Jays advance to the regional semifinals where they will face Fort Loramie Redskins on Tuesday, June 2, in Cedarville at 5 p.m.
