Columbus Grove storms past New Bremen in sectional final matchup

COLUMBUS GROVE, Ohio (WLIO) — Tournament baseball action continued Saturday in Putnam County as Columbus Grove Bulldogs hosted New Bremen Cardinals in a battle between the Northwest Conference and the Midwest Athletic Conference.
New Bremen struck first in the top of the opening inning. Eli Cathcart lined a base hit into left-center field, allowing Caleb Keller to score and give the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead.
Later in the inning, a passed ball brought home Gavin Quellhorst as New Bremen extended its advantage to 2-0.
Columbus Grove answered in the bottom half of the frame. Brady Basinger drove an RBI double into the gap in right-center field to score Alex Meyer and cut the deficit to one.
The Bulldogs continued to rally with the bases loaded. Carter Flores delivered a bases-clearing double to deep center field, bringing home Basinger, Jacob Ricker and Wyatt Fuerst to put Columbus Grove ahead 4-2.
In the top of the second inning, Basinger settled in on the mound and recorded a strikeout looking as the Bulldogs maintained control.
Columbus Grove went on to defeat New Bremen 6-3. The Bulldogs advance to the district semifinal in USV where they will play Marion Local on May 27 at 2 p.m.
