LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — May is Stroke Awareness Month, and doctors are urging people to learn the warning signs of a stroke and seek medical attention immediately.
A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel bursts, cutting off oxygen to the brain and potentially causing permanent damage.
Doctors at Lima Memorial Health System say common risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity and smoking.
Medical professionals are encouraging the public to remember the acronym “BE FAST” to recognize the signs of a stroke:
- Balance — sudden loss of balance
- Eyes — sudden vision changes
- Face — facial drooping
- Arms — arm weakness
- Speech — slurred speech or difficulty speaking
- Time — time to call 911
Doctors say immediate treatment is critical because early intervention can reduce long-term brain damage and improve the chances of recovery.
“The longer that we wait when someone is having an acute stroke, the increased risk of permanent damage or cell death, which means the less chance of a meaningful recovery,” said Dr. Russell Maxon. “We always recommend that if you or a loved one are having any symptoms of a stroke to not wait at all.”
Doctors say strokes can happen at any age, although older adults remain at the highest risk.
If someone is showing signs of a stroke, doctors recommend calling 911 immediately rather than driving to the hospital.
