DEFIANCE, Ohio (WLIO) — A Northwest Conference rivalry delivered a classic in the Division VI district final as the Crestview Knights battled back to defeat the Spencerville Bearcats 64-62 in double overtime.
Spencerville won the regular-season meeting back in December, but the postseason rematch brought plenty of drama.
Both teams traded blows in the opening quarter. Owen Sensabaugh turned the ball over but quickly got it back and buried a three-pointer to help the Bearcats take a 13-10 lead after one. The senior finished with a team-high 16 points.
Spencerville continued to control the tempo in the second quarter. Grady Smith spun his way to the basket for two of his 11 points, giving the Bearcats a 21-14 advantage at halftime.
Crestview faced a 13-point deficit in the second half but refused to go away. Will Sheets powered through contact for an and-one, cutting into the Bearcats’ lead as the Knights slowly chipped away.
Hayden Perrott added another spark, gliding to the rim for two. Later in the fourth quarter, Perrott knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key to trim the deficit to just two.
In the final moments of regulation, Crestview trailed by three. Perrott delivered again, draining a catch-and-shoot triple to tie the game at 51 and send it to overtime.
In the first extra period, Kolten Grisby finished inside as both teams scored four points, sending the game to double overtime tied at 55.
In the second overtime, Will Sensabaugh knocked down a three-pointer for Spencerville. The junior finished with a team-high 16 points.
But Crestview had one last answer.
With the score tied at 62 and just five seconds remaining, the Knights missed a layup attempt — but Will Sheets was there for the tip-in. The junior finished with a game-high 31 points and gave Crestview the late lead.
Spencerville had one final chance with 1.5 seconds left, but the last shot fell short.
Crestview completes the comeback and wins the Division VI district championship 64-62 in double overtime.
Now the Knights will head to Bowling Green State University on Thursday, March 12th where they await the winner of Lincolnview and Gibsonburg.
