LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) The truck driver charged in a deadly crash that killed a Lima father and son appeared in court Thursday.

Yvio Michel, 53, of Boynton Beach, Florida, is charged with two counts of negligent homicide, two counts of vehicular manslaughter and failure to maintain an assured clear distance. The charges stem from a six-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 on Feb. 28 that killed Hurshel Gipson, 52, and his 11-year-old son, and injured several others.

Michel pleaded not guilty in court on Thursday. Court officials say Michel is not a U.S. citizen and has limited English-speaking abilities. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is still investigating the cause of the crash. The tractor-trailer involved remains in the state patrol’s possession.

Michel, an independent truck driver, will be allowed to reside in Florida while the case is pending. His bond was modified to $25,000, and he is not permitted to operate a motor vehicle while the case is pending.
